If you're worried your kids wont sit still, smile or behave during a photoshoot, then good news - they don't have to!
Most of the families I photograph have young children, usually between the ages of one and five (hello peak meltdown season) I am a mum myself and know all too well how tricky this stage can be. I also know that it is the absolute cutest stage of life and so important to capture.
The families you see in my images aren't calm, perfectly coordinated unicorns. They're real families, full of movement and with plenty of personality.
As a Sunshine Coast family photographer, my approach is simple and intentional. I focus on play, connection and letting families be exactly who they are because that's where natural, candid family photos come from.
Below is my 5 step formula to allow for real moments to unfold
1. play
This one is super important at helping the whole family to relax. Play is the magic ingredient. I have a handful of 'go to' games which almost always end in giggles but if you have your own little games or silly rituals, bring the in! Kids light up when play feels familiar.
2. engage
It's so important to engage with your children. Make it all about them. I don't expect them to look at me and smile and neither should you! Do the things you'd do at home to make them giggle, smile or squeal with laughter. I am here for it! Forget about the camera and just connect with each other. I can promise you, if you are actively engaged with your children and having a great time you are going to cherish the photos!
3. touch
Stay close, cuddle up to each other. Close the gaps between you. I want to see the LOVE! Don't worry about looking perfect. Just be present
4. Let go
Let go of expectations. Sometimes things don't go to plan, kids have meltdowns, run straight into the ocean or refuse to wear the cute outfit you picked. I've seen it all and I promise I'll still get beautiful photos!
5. have fun!!
Trust the process. Even if it feels a little chaotic, I'm seeing the light, the connection, the details, you're too close to notice. You're doing better than you think and the final gallery will show it.
